New Trier Stops Wolfpack
05/18/2013 - Varsity

The Pack were pumped and ready for a battle and, after a pregame video from star stopper Ginny Somers, the team attacked New Trier and owned the game for the first 20 minutes.  New Trier managed to score first but that did not take the wind out of the Pack’s sails.  After New Trier scored their second, the Pack intensified their assault, scoring one of their own when Casey Skapek headed home a Ginny Somers’ free kick; unfortunately the goal was taken back.  The Pack lost 2-0 but played their greatest game of the season.  The Pack end their season with an 11-8-4 record. 


Pack Top Leyden

The Wolfpack won the opening round of the IHSA Regional last night 4-1 over Leyden. The Pack came out slowly, allowing Leyden a glimmer of hope by getting the first goal.  Caroline Coughlan swiftly roped Ignatius back in with a hat trick in seven minutes.  Casey Skapek finished the scoring after turning home Maura Walsh’s assist. 

Pack Take 2nd in GCAC

The Wolfpack fell 3-0 to Loyola in the GCAC Championship game. After holding the Ramblers to a 0-0 draw at halftime, the Wolfpack yielded three unanswered second half goals and were unable to generate much offensive pressure. Team captains Gaby Barkidjija, Molly McClure and Teresa Lee led a young team dominated by 17 freshmen to an impressive 12-5-2 record in the 2013 season, earning 2nd place in the GCAC with a 5-2-0 conference record.

Mighty Macs Tie Wolfpack

The Wolfpack tied the Mighty Macs of Mother McAuley 1-1 on a wet Thursday afternoon on the road for 2nd Place in the GCAC Championships. McAuley opened the scoring early in the second half but the Pack came back as Caroline Coughlan won a 50-50 ball in the corner, putting in a beautiful cross where Jill Porretta was waiting perfectly for the volley off the back post and in.

Pack in GCAC Championship

The Pack defeated McAuley 4-1 in a GCAC semifinal on  Tuesday. Caroline Staublin scored first off an assist from Grace Brown. The Mighty Macs tied it up after the defense had difficulty clearing the ball. Gaby Barkidjija put the Wolfpack ahead for good on a perfectly executed free kick. In the second half Molly Murphy added a solo strike and an additional goal off an assist from Tara Andrews to seal the victory. The midfield deserves special recognition for controlling the middle on a difficult-to-play-on grass field. Christine Lee, Lauren Franklin and Kate Lohnes had notable performances. The win brings the team record to 12-4-2 heading into the GCAC final against Loyola on Thursday.

Pack Tie Wheaton North

The Wolfpack tied Wheaton North 1-1 on Senior Day at home.  The Pack outplayed their opponent for the majority of the game but went down 1-0. Maura Walsh scored the only Pack goal after finishing a fantastic cross from Jill Porretta.

The Pack is 11-4-2 heading into the final week of play thanks to two victories on Thursday and Friday. The Wolfpack defeated Queen of Peace 7-0 in Round 1 of the GCAC Tournament with goals from Grace Brown, Anne Reardon, Senhit Berhane, Caroline Staublin, Christine Lee and Maggie Danaher. Julia Downey assisted on three goals, Kate Lohnes assisted twice and Christine Lee helped out on one. Anna Zappa, Claudia Sierra and Olivia Kinsella all played well at defense. The Wolfpack also defeated New Trier 2-0 on Friday with goals from Tara Andrews and Grace Brown, both assisted by Caroline Staublin. A hard-fought contest from beginning to end, huge credit goes to the defense who weathered a second half storm and held firm. Claire Reardon, Cara Geoghegan, Gaby Barkidjija, Hope Marks and Caroline O'Grady along with keeper Haley Christian led Ignatius.

Wolfpack Edge Madison Edgewood

Although the Wolfpack (9-7-2 overall) held the ball for the majority of the game, the score line read 1-0 in favor of the Pack at the end in a win over Madison Edgewood.  A great possession and shooting clinic was put on but as Caroline Coughlan and Ginny Somers matched up on the corner kick as Coughlan thumped in the header.


Wolfpack Top Bandits

The Pack (10-7-3 overall) defeated the Bandits of Resurrection 4-0 in makeup game. Ignatius controlled possession and four different players scored.  Casey Skapek, Caroline Coughlan, Maura Walsh and Jill Porretta all hit the back of the net, being assisted by Caroline Coughlan, Ginny Somers, Ellie Rollo and Jacky Gonzalez. 

Pack 2-1 in Catholic Cup
05/01/2013 - Varsity

The Pack went 2-1-0 in the Catholic Cup finishing in 2nd place behind Fenwick.  Ignatius defeated Marist 2-1 as Caroline Coughlan headed home a Ginny Somers corner to open the scoring.  Jill Porretta added to that from an Amanda Clark assist for the win.  The Wolfpack then fell to the Friars of Fenwick 2-1 as three penalties and playing a player down for the last 30 minutes hurt the Pack.  Ignatius then bounced back for a 2-1 win over Providence. Coughlan and Somers connected on a corner kick while Ellie Rollo finished the scoring on a assist from Maura Walsh.

The Wolfpack improved to 9-4-2 with a solid 1-0 win over Providence in the Catholic Cup. After a scoreless first dominated by forwards Molly Murphy and Caroline Staublin, the score remained 0-0. In the second half, Lauren Franklin scored the game's only goal off an assist from Anne Reardon, but it was the defense that kept their composure to seal the victory. Hope Marks and Anna Zappa played well as did all-purpose player Claire Reardon who did a fantastic job filling in at sweeper.


Frairs Hold Off Pack

The Wolfpack lost a close one on Saturday to Fenwick by a score of 1-0. After a lackluster first half which found them behind a goal, the girls came back and dominated possession in the second half. Despite pressuring the goal, the Wolfpack were unable to find the back of the net. Gaby Barkidjija held the defense together along with Cara Geoghegan and Molly McClure.

Wolfpack Defeat Redhawks

The Pack defeated Marist, 1-0, in the 1st round of the Catholic Cup. Freshman Lauren Franklin scored the only goal in the first half, assisted by Anne Reardon. Despite outshooting the opponent 2-1, the game remained close. Molly Murphy kept pressure offensively, Claire Reardon helped maintain composure, and Caroline O'Grady stood out on defense.

The Pack (4-1-0 GCAC) got back on their conference wagon with a 4-0 win against Queen of Peace.  Ginny Somers opened the scoring with a 25-yard blast from Maura Walsh (2 assists, 2 goals). Walsh added to the score line before halftime on an assist from Caroline Coughlan while Katie Johnson finished the scoring with an assist from Jill Porretta.

The Wolfpack defeated Queen of Peace 8-0 on Tuesday. Molly Murphy scored a hat trick to lead the Wolfpack offense while Cara Geoghegan added two of her own. Molly McClure, Teresa Lee and Senhit Berhane (2 assists) all added goals in the shutout.

The Pack (6-6-2 overall) defeated Queen of Peace 4-0 playing a great possession game until Ginny Somers slammed home a 25 yard shot from Maura Walsh.  Walsh doubled the scoring in the first half converting a Caroline Coughlan assist.  Maura Walsh and Katie Johnson finished the scoring with assists from Jill Porretta and another from Walsh. 

Ramblers Shut Down Wolfpack

The Pack played well for the first 10 minutes against conference competitors the Ramblers.  The Ramblers took control, scoring 5 goals in the next 10 minutes.  The Pack fell 7-0, with a record of 3-1 in conference.

Pack Tie OPRF

The Wolfpack tied Oak Park River Forest 1-1 on Monday afternoon. Caroline Staublin scored off a beautiful chip over the keeper from Tara Andrews. A series of defensive miscues allowed OPRF to equalize as Lauren Franklin, playing both defense and midfield, worked hard to create several offensive opportunities but the Pack was unable to capitalize.


Wolfpack 1-2-1 in Pepsi Showdown
04/15/2013 - Varsity

The Wolfpack (5-5-1 overall) entered the Pepsi tournament a #27 seed and faced #6 seed Lockport in round one, losing 4-0.  Fighting through tough competition and a 40-mile hour wind, the Pack played extremely well with solid games from Isabelle Braman, Ginny Somers and Grace Devitt in defense, Jill Porretta and Caroline Coughlan in midfield, and Maura Walsh and Katie Johnson in offense.  The Wolfpack faced Plainfield Central in game two where the Pack dominated possession; Jill Porretta was taken down in the box.  Jill converted her penalty for the only score of the game and the Pack went on to win 1-0.  The Pack faced OPRF in game three and continued their possession game, keeping the ball for the majority of the game.  The Pack had ample chances but unfortunately could not get the ball across the goal line.  In a goal-saving effort, Ginny Somers stopped OPRF from scoring and in return lost her 2 front teeth.  This was the greatest team game the Pack has played this year, ending in a 0-0 tie.  The fourth game of the tournament was by far the hardest to swallow.  In a game that was dominated by the Pack in both possession and chances, the Pack lost 2-0 to Deerfield.  The Pack finished the tournament playing well but fell to a 1-2-1 record and 5-5-1 overall.

Pack Keep Rolling

The Wolfpack extended their winning streak to four, defeating Shepard on Friday by a score of 4-0. Caroline Staublin scored first, assisted by Grace Brown. Julia Downey added one off a pass from Tara Andrews. In the second half Kate Lohnes assisted on Grace Brown's goal. Finally, Molly Murphy completed a brilliant corner kick play from Hope Marks. The team played solid possession soccer from front to back. Special recognition goes to Claire Reardon on defense, Anne Reardon and Lauren Franklin in the midfield, and Senhit Berhane at forward.

Wolfpack Win Third Straight

The Wolfpack earned their third win in a row, defeating St. Viator 2-0. Molly Murphy scored first off an assist from Caroline Staublin. Tara Andrews added a solo strike in the second half. Midfielder Maggie Danaher and defender Claudia Sierra helped stabilize a team that struggled to control the ball in the first half.

Lane Tops Pack in Round of Pepsi Challenge

The Pack (4-3-1 overall) fought a tough and physical game against Lane Tech, falling 5-3 in the opener of the Pepsi Challenge.  Although giving up an early goal, Katie Johnson equalized and gave the Pack some life but the Trojans took off with 3 more unanswered goals.  The Pack clawed back with a penalty from Maura Walsh and a 45-yard free kick from Caroline Coughlan but the Pack were defeated 5-3.

Wolfpack Comeback to Top Lane

The Pack (4-3-1 overall) defeated Lane Tech 2-1 in a come-from-behind victory that showed the true determination. After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the Wolfpack stepped up the pressure on the ball and managed to control the tempo of the game. After failing to convert on several quality chances, including a free kick and a penalty kick, Molly Murphy scored the tying goal off an assist from Senhit Berhane. Junior captain, Gaby Barkidjija, notched the game-winning goal off a trademark 30-yard free kick that found the back of the net. 

Pack Blanks Mighty Macs

After a much-needed Easter break, the Wolfpack (3-3-1 overall, 2-1-0 GCAC) returned to their winning ways by defeating Mother McAuley 3-0. Molly Murphy scored twice, assisted by Grace Brown and Christine Lee. In between, Tara Andrews added a solo strike. Defensive standouts included Caroline O'Grady and Molly McClure. Freshman keeper Haley Christian earned her first career shutout.

The Wolfpack (4-2-1, 3-0) faced their third conference opponent of the season and defeated Mt. Assisi 5-0.  The Pack controlled the ball and the speed of play with another convincing game from sophomore winger Jill Porretta and junior sweeper Ginny Somers.  Two goals each from Maura Walsh and Katie Johnson and one from Caroline Coughlan finished the scoring.

The Wolfpack (3-2-1 overall, 2-0 GCAC) hosted conference opponent Regina where they slipped out to a 7-0 lead.  Maggie Skalitzky opened the scoring from one of Jill Porretta’s two assists, Maura Walsh put away 2 goals, Ellie Rollo, and Jackie Gonzalez, Caroline Coughlan and Megan Rivera finished the scoring with Gonzalez getting 2 assists.  Emily Bridges and Ginny Somers also chipped in with assists. 

Dukes Shut Down Pack
03/25/2013 - Varsity

The Pack (2-2-1 overall) hosted state-ranked York and lost 3-0. The Dukes were awarded a penalty kick and capitalized on a 25-yard free kick past senior goalkeeper Emma Brown in the first half and a second 30-yard free kick past sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Loyo in the second half.

The Wolfpack earned their second victory of the season over Niles North by a score of 5-0. Molly Murphy scored the only goal of the 1st half unassisted. In the second half, goals were added by Tara Andrews from Gaby Barkidjija, Caroline Staublin scored on a solo shot, Senhit Berhane from Grace Brown and Lauren Franklin from Molly Murphy.

Pack Freeze Out Niles North

After three games in quick succession, the Pack (2-1-1 overall) was hungry for a win over Niles North at home.  The Pack began strong and never took their foot off the gas as they passed the ball with ease, running off each other and releasing one-touch passes.  Although the Pack had the majority of the possessions and chances, the score remained 0-0 at half.  Ignatius came out strong and Maura Walsh finished twice, turning home an Ellie Rollo cross and then finishing a Caroline Coughlan pass beautifully to seal the 2-0 win. 

Wolfpack Tie Lyons Township

The Pack (1-1-1 overall) hosted state powerhouse Lyons Township in a battle of a game that ended in a 0-0 tie.  The Pack defended as a unit and allowed nothing from the Lions until the last minute of the game when Michelle Loyo saw the ball bounce off the Pack post and bounce back out for Isabelle Braman to clear out.

The Wolfpack lost 1-0 to Lyons Township on Saturday. After yielding a goal 22 seconds into the game, the Wolfpack woke up and solidified the defense. During the second half the team became more physical in challenging the ball and pressuring the opponent's defense. The Wolfpack are 1-1-1 after the first week of play.
 

Wolfpack Tie Hinsdale Central in Thriller

In an exhilarating game from start to finish, the Wolfpack stunned Hinsdale Central with a 1-1 tie last night. After a scoreless first half in which the defense was pressed constantly, the Pack managed to find some composure in the second half. Hinsdale scored with 6 minutes left in the game on a well-placed shot but the Wolfpack never gave up hope. With 7.5 seconds left in the game, Caroline O'Grady launched the ball into the box from a sideline throw-in. Molly Murphy managed to head the ball out to Tara Andrews who lobbed the ball just over the outstretched arms of the keeper and under the crossbar with :01 on the clock. The defense deserves special mention: Cara Geoghegan, Molly McClure, Gaby Barkidjija, Hope Marks and Caroline O'Grady worked hard throughout the game to keep Hinsdale out of the net, but the tie would not have been possible without several key stops by keeper Teresa Lee.

Hinsdale Central Stops Wolfpack

The Wolfpack (1-1-0 overall) travelled to Hinsdale Central where they put together a team effort on both sides of the ball.  Just before halftime, Hinsdale slipped in the only goal of the game and defeted the Pack 1-0.  The Pack did not sit back; they attacked and Maura Walsh came close to equalizing from a Ginny Somers ball.  Caroline Coughlan nearly turned home a power header from an Ellie Rollo cross.

Pack Win Opener

The Wolfpack opened up against Trinity with a 3-1 win on the road.  The Pack overpowered the Blazers as Maura Walsh stole the ball from the Trinity midfield and slipped it into the back of the net.  Caroline Coughlan added to the score line, turning home a through ball from Grace Devitt and Katie Johnson capped the scoring, finishing a Caroline Coughlan assist.  Great goalkeeping from Emma Brown kept the Blazers from scoring more than 1 goal.

The Wolfpack notched their first win of the season against Trinity, 1-0, under snowy and slippery conditions. Sophomore Caroline Staublin scored the game's only goal in the first half off an assist from freshman Christine Lee. Junior keeper Teresa Lee earned her first shutout of the season.
