Introduction

Saint Ignatius has a long history of success in track and field, with a banner full
of championships and several recent graduates competing successfully
at the college level. Our best athletes compete at the state level as qualifiers to the IHSA Championships. But we invite
students of all levels and abilities to join our team. We are a no-cut sport, and
every athlete who comes to practice every day, works hard, and supports his teammates
gets a uniform and competes in our meets. We have athletes who run, jump, throw,
and vault—and we work with all our athletes to find the events that best fit
their talents and abilities.
Track season is the longest sports season at Saint Ignatius—starting in January
and extending to the end of May. We practice and compete in all kinds of weather
and under many different circumstances. The length of our season allows us to do
some special things. We have more time to become mentally and physically prepared
for our major events in the spring. Our athletes can sometimes make astonishing
improvements in performance during the course of the season. We plan our training
to be at the top of our game at the conference meet and the state track meet series
in May.

Track and field competition is about hard work, diligence,
and perseverance, but it is also about personal success, friendship, and fun. Athletes
who wish to have all of these things in their season need to adhere closely to the
guidelines and philosophy of our program. They need to trust their coaches and their
teammates. At times, an athlete might find himself entered in a race that he is
reluctant to run. At times, he might not agree with every aspect of his training.
But our athletes must trust that their coaches have planned carefully for both their
personal success and the success of the team. They must know that everyone on the
team is expecting the best for each other. For these reasons, we ask our athletes
to prepare themselves to go beyond the limitations that they think they have. We
ask them to be willing to stretch themselves while they also support their teammates
as they attempt to go beyond their limits, as well.
Getting the most out of each individual’s talent—and sometimes discovering
a talent that the athlete didn’t know he possessed—is one goal of our
team. Success for each athlete translates into success for the team.
Philosophy
Track and Field at Saint Ignatius is a team sport. The team supports the individuals
who must push themselves to face their physical, mental, and emotional limits. Individually
we have special talents and abilities. Through genuine exertions and efforts, we
will learn to recognize and use these talents. Supported by coaches and teammates,
individuals will grow through the process of training and development—and
through their accomplishments. Though separated by training regimens and the geography
of tracks, pits, and cages, we are one team with one identity and one goal: to put
in our best efforts every day. Our best efforts will make each of us—and our
team—winners.
