IHSA State Champions!!! 1st State Title in 144 Year School History!!!

On Saturday the Wolfpack made school history when they beat Lincoln Way Central 12-9 in the IHSA State Championship game at Stevenson.  The win marked the first time in Ignatius’ 144-year history a team sport won an IHSA State Title.  Led by Metro Catholic Aquatic Conference Player of the Year Becky Insalaco and All-State standout Tammy Stelnicki, the Wolfpack put together an overall season record of 22-4-1 heading into the State Tournament where they would meet familiar foes on their road to destiny.  The Wolfpack matched up with Catholic League rival and the state's top-ranked team, Mother McAuley, in the semi-finals.  The game proved to be an epic battle with neither team having more than a one-goal lead at any given time.  But as time expired, the Wolfpack were crowned the 8-7 victors and earned another trip to the state championship game for the program's third time in the past seven years.  The title game was truly a team effort with offensive contributions from Insalaco, Stelnicki, juniors Rebecca Martinez, Maggie Maloney and Nikol Lagodzinska, sophomore Karen Juarez, and freshman Diana Fernandez, and on the defensive end the Pack lived up to its reputation as one of the stingiest in the state behind freshman goalie Jenny Stelnicki who had over two and half dozen saves in the net.  Water Polo received varsity status at Saint Ignatius in the spring of 2000; since then the program has won nine IHSA sectional championships and one MCAC conference title, earned IHSA 3rd Place honors three times, and has been the State Runner-Up twice.  The championship is a true testament to the program's motto of "Players Graduate Tradition Continues"!

Wolfpack End Regular Season With a Win

The Wolfpack (19-10) finished the regular season on a five-game winning streak as they prepare to enter the state play-offs.  The Pack offense found success early in the game as Tess Russell and Katie Gallagher singled to start the first inning.  An RBI double by Colleen Hoffman and an RBI single by Maura Lynch put the Pack up 2-0.  Reavis cut the lead to one but the Pack scored two more in the third inning.  Kate Lorenz singled to lead off the inning and was followed by a single by Russell.  Gallagher hit a double to score both Lorenz and Russell, putting the Pack up 4-1.  Reavis evened the score in the bottom of the fifth.  In the top of the seventh inning, Diane Casini singled and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Elyse Wisniewski.  Casini scored the winning run when Caroline Herman reached base on an errant throw.  The Wolfpack face Evanston on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Maine West.

New Trier Stops Wolfpack

The Pack were pumped and ready for a battle and, after a pregame video from star stopper Ginny Somers, the team attacked New Trier and owned the game for the first 20 minutes.  New Trier managed to score first but that did not take the wind out of the Pack’s sails.  After New Trier scored their second, the Pack intensified their assault, scoring one of their own when Casey Skapek headed home a Ginny Somers’ free kick; unfortunately the goal was taken back.  The Pack lost 2-0 but played their greatest game of the season.  The Pack end their season with an 11-8-4 record.

New Trier Ends Pack Season

The Wolfpack lost their play-off game 21-2 to perennial powerhouse New Trier.  Although Brigid Doherty came up with the first draw control of the evening and got off a shot on goal in the first minutes, it was difficult for the Pack to gain momentum against the Trevians' tight and aggressive defense.  Nevertheless, senior Katie Moran had five stops on goal and the Pack managed to squeeze two goals out of the Trevians, both by sophomore Dominique Leone.  The first goal was made after a draw control by Claudia Vickrey, who passed to Leone who ran it in for a rocketing shot to the back of the net.  Leone's second goal was on a free position as the Pack finish the year at 9-14 overall.
