Introduction
What’s all the BUZZ? The hottest new club for girls: Saint Ignatius Girls Field
Hockey. Where else can you run up a grassy field, dribbling an orange ball through
the chaos of clacking field hockey sticks all while wearing a cute skirt—but don’t
let the skirt fool you. Field hockey is an intense sport--a cross between lacrosse,
ice hockey, and soccer. While our emphasis lies on having fun together, what you
learn from field hockey, you can take with you far from the hockey field—and the
lessons last a lifetime. The door of opportunity is still open for anyone who wants
to join—regardless of skills or fitness level. If you want to stay active and meet
new people, Saint Ignatius Girls Field Hockey Club is the perfect way to gain leadership
skills, have fun and make friends.
The Game: The men first sent teams to the Olympics in 1908 and women joined
in 1980. Two thirty-minute halves are played between teams fielding 11 players per
side (including the goalkeeper). Goals can only be scored from inside the 16-yard
semicircle.
The Field: The game is played on artificial turf (100 yards by 60 yards).
The Stick: Sticks often weigh somewhere between 18 oz and 26 oz and range
in length between 26 and 38 inches. Forwards tend toward a lighter stick while defenders
grab something heavier.
The Ball: A bit larger than a baseball, field hockey balls are solid plastic
weighing between 5 ½ ounces and 5 ¾ ounces. They can be fired in excess of 75 mph
at elite levels.
