Wolfpack End Historical Run at State
02/25/2014 - Varsity

This past weekend the Wolfpack sent more than one wrestler down to Champaign for the first time since 2001. Mick Shanahan and Pat Mulkerin finished their stellar seasons competing like champions.  Mulkerin had a tough opening bout and fell to his Harvard opponent 3-2. Mulkerin lost his next bout which eliminated him from the tournament. Mulkerin should hold his head high after this season because he was the first wrestler in school history to win a conference, regional and sectional title. Pat has big expectations for his final season next year. Shanahan had a very good tournament but came up a little short in the end. His first bout against Kevin Zange from Woodstock was a hard- fought 5-2 win. In the quarter-finals Shanahan lost 13-3 to eventual two-time place winner Daniel Close of Ottawa.  In the wrestle backs Shanahan secured a dominant 7-5 win against Mason Lee of Highland. Finally, Shanahan got caught on his back, losing his placing match to eventual 3rd place finisher Nick Remke of Marian Central. Going 2-2 and coming just a match away from placing at the state meet is a huge accomplishment and capped off one of the top three wrestling careers in school history.

On to Champaign!!!
02/18/2014 - Varsity

On to Champaign! Congratulations to Michael Shanahan and Pat Mulkerin for punching their tickets to the IHSA state tournament this past weekend! Shanahan will be heading to his 2nd straight state tournament with a 2nd place finish at sectionals. After having an amazing 2nd half to his senior year, his 22-match win streak came to an end in the finals by dropping a close 7-6 match to Lemont’s Jimmy Brennan. Shanahan will be heading into state with a 32-7 record as a senior.  Pat Mulkerin will get his first taste of Champaign on Thursday by capping off a stellar post-season with a sectional title. Mulkerin has now swept post-season tournaments this year by winning conference, regional and sectional titles. He enters the tournament with a #4 seed and a 28-7 record. This is the first time since 2001 that the Wolfpack will be sending multiple wrestlers to compete at the IHSA state tournament.  The rest of the Pack exceeded the coaching staff’s expectations this weekend at the De La Salle Sectional.  Other standout performances were turned in by Colin Sweeney and Michael Close who are going as alternates.  Both finished a match away from qualifying as they still have an opportunity to compete this Thursday night. Senior Andrew Salinas also narrowly missed being a qualifier by dropping his win-or-go-home match. Salinas beat two wrestlers who had beaten him just the week before to get to that point.  Overall the team peaked at the right time and performed to the best of their abilities, showing people that Ignatius wrestling is on the rise!

Four Wrestlers Bring Home IHSA Regional Titles
02/10/2014 - Varsity

The Wolfpack went into the Riverside-Brookfield IHSA Regional tournament with high expectations and excelled! The Pack qualified 9 out of 13 wrestlers to next weekend’s IHSA Sectional tournament at De La Salle. Top performers Sean Kulinski, Mike Shanahan, Sal Curran and Pat Mulkerin all won IHSA Regional titles. Kulinski, Shanahan and Mulkerin won their second straight championship. Michael Close and freshman Pat Walsh both took second place in their respective weight classes.  Niko Polite, Colin Sweeney and Andrew Salinas all qualified by placing third.  Overall the team finished in second place behind host Riverside-Brookfield. The team finished in a close second for the second straight year which is another high for the program.  Things look bright for the grapplers going into this coming weekend as they are hoping to send multiple wrestlers to the state tournament for the first time since 2001.

History Makers!!!!
01/29/2014 - Varsity

Saint Ignatius has not had a Chicago Catholic League Champion since 1999 and that all changed this past weekend at the CCL Championships held at Mt. Carmel.  Mick Shanahan (26-6 at 145 lbs.) and Pat Mulkerin (22-6 at 195lbs.) captured CCL crowns, making history as the Wolfpack have never had two individual champions in one year either.  Only one wrestler in Wolfpack history has captured a CCL crown before this season. Colin Sweeney was unranked in the tournament and battled for a 3rd place finish winning his final four bouts at 132 lbs. for the third Wolfpack grappler to hit the medal stand.  The Pack finished with a team total of 78 points which marks the highest finish for the team in ten years. Congratulations to all the wrestlers as they gear up for the IHSA State Tournament.

Furthermore Shanahan is 5 pins away from becoming the school’s record holder in career falls which is 67.

The Wolfpack traveled to their final regular season tournament at Lincoln in central Illinois. Again the team competed well against tough 2A competitors. The Wolfpack placed 2 wrestlers. Standout performances by the squad’s 2 team captains earned them a place on the podium. Michael Shanahan was the top performer, finishing in 3rd place by acquiring a pair of tech falls and a pin. Pat Mulkerin finished in 5th place after reaching the semis in a weight class stacked with ranked wrestlers. The team competes again at Lane Tech in a quad with Marian Catholic and Kelly.

Mulkerin Leads Pack

Last weekend at Glenbrook South the Wolfpack competed in another tough, primarily a 3A tournament. The Wolfpack only placed one wrestler but their presence was known with 5 grapplers competing in the placing round. Pat Mulkerin was the only one to make it on the podium taking a very respectable 2nd place at 195 lbs.  The Pack continues their season next weekend at another two day wrestling tournament in Lincoln, Illinois on December 27th and 28th.

Tough Weekend for Wolfpack
12/16/2013 - Varsity

The Wolfpack again competed hard but dropped a few more duals this past weekend.  On Friday night the Pack traveled to Fenwick to take on the Friars, St. Patrick and St. Laurence. A few very questionable calls that went the other way caused the team to lose a close one to Fenwick 39-34.  The next two duals were against very experienced teams from St. Patrick and St. Laurence, losing 48-11 to the Shamrocks and 49-33 to the Vikings of Laurence.  On Saturday the 24th-ranked Simeon Wolverines came to Ignatius. Plagued by injuries the Wolfpack again lost 45-21 and forfeited 5 weight classes.  Although the team went 0-4 on the weekend, there were some bright spots.  The top grappler for Ignatius was freshman Patrick Walsh who is having a very nice start to his high school career and finished the weekend with a respectable 3-1 record.

The Wolfpack are back in action this Friday, Dec 13th, at Fenwick against St. Laurence and St. Patrick.

Wolfpack Tops Mather but Edged by Ramblers
12/06/2013 - Varsity

The Wolfpack were in action on Thursday night at Loyola. To begin the night Ignatius took on the Mather Rangers and dominated the dual from the get go, winning 58-18. Freshman Pat Walsh started the dual off with his first career varsity win and the dual finished in dramatic fashion with a fellow freshman attaining his first career win as Luca Di Leo recorded a fall in overtime. Against Loyola the Pack came out hot once again with pins coming from Niko Polite and Mike Close. Andrew Salinas had a hard-fought win at 152 and the team had a commanding 33-10 lead going into the last 4 matches. Things didn't end as smoothly as the Pack lost their last 4 matches and an extremely close dual 34-33  to a good Loyola team.

Mather and Loyola Top Pack
12/06/2013 - JV

The Pack dropped both dual meets against Loyola and Mather Thursday night in their first chance at competition. Strong performances from every member of the Wolfpack were highlighted by a 2-0 outing by freshman Rafael Curran. They continue in action this Friday at home against SFDS and Phillips.

Wolfpack Compete Hard at Barrington Invite
12/02/2013 - Varsity

The Wolfpack competed in a 24-team invitational at Barrington, one of the top 3 in-season tournaments in the state. The team competed hard and 2 out of 10 wrestlers placed in the top 8 of their respective weight classes. Michael Shanahan was the Wolfpack top competitor, taking 7th, and Pat Mulkerin finished 8th.
