Saint Ignatius provides a comprehensive, ongoing college placement service that
includes testing, individual and group counseling, family planning interviews, and
application processing for college admissions, scholarships, and financial aid.
Because the process of selecting a college is personal, individual counseling sessions
are provided as needed to review the strenghts and weaknesses of the student's high
school record in relation to education/career goals. To help in this process, representatives
from more than 125 colleges visit the school throughout the fall, usually during
the junior-senior lunch period, to talk with students about specific college goals.
Several times during the year, each junior and senior receives a bulletin that lists
college open house dates and current scholarship information.
Testing. Students are given the following standardized tests:
PLAN - This test, administered to all sophomores, provides direction
for educational and career planning and has the additional benefit of providing
practice for both the PSAT and ACT assessments (see below) taken by nearly all juniors.
PSAT/NMSQT - Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National
Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test . This test is taken in the fall
of junior year as a qualifying test for national recognition and preparation for
the SAT that will be taken in the spring of junior year.
ACT AND SAT - American College Testing Program and the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
Because most colleges require scores on the ACT or the SAT, all students are encouraged
to take both tests in the spring of their junior year.
SAT Subject Tests . Hour long exams are administered in different
subject areas. Offered at different times during the year, these are necessary at
some colleges for admissions and placement.
AP - Advanced Placement Tests . These tests are for students who
have taken Advanced Placement or certain honors level courses in high school. APs
are given in May in specific subject areas. Depending on a particular college's
AP policy, a student may gain advanced standing in college. Other tests are available
upon request or at the counselor's discretion. Professional consultation and
referral are used when necessary.
