Introduction
Cross Country is an endurance sport that incorporates both team and individual components. Saint Ignatius has a modified no-cut policy with respect to this program. This policy allows new student-athletes the opportunity to learn the sport at their own rate. Returnees of all skill levels are expected be in shape when the season starts so they can handle the training volume of the varsity team. To remain on the team, all student-athletes must commit to all of the meets and practices on the schedule.
Matt Haffner has been the Saint Ignatius College Prep Girls Cross Country Head Coach since 2007. In that time, the team has won seven GCAC titles, seven regional titles and it’s qualified for the State Finals six times. During the past four seasons, the Wolfpack finished fifth, twice.
Prior to his work at Saint Ignatius, Coach Haffner earned Level II Certification through USA Track and Field. After running collegiately at Northwestern University, he coached at the NAIA and NCAA Division III level.
When he’s not guiding his runners, Coach Haffner teaches computer science and is the assistant registrar.

IHSA State Champions!!!
The Wolfpack made program and state history on Saturday by winning the IHSA 2A State Championship at Detweiller Park in Peoria, IL. Winning its very first IHSA state championship with an overall team score of 76, the Wolfpack won in a dominant performance, defeating second place DePaul College Prep by 101 points, and third place Chatham by 141 points. The win was the largest margin of victory (boys and girls) for any of the IHSA State Championship meets this season. The Wolfpack also became the very first Chicago-based high school to win an IHSA girls cross country state championship, in any classification, in state history. The Pack was led by Annika Swan (16:27.80), who finished second overall, along with Allison Shutler (9th, 17:13.85) and Greta Sheaffer (23rd, 17:46.21), who each received individual medals for finishing in the top-25. IHSA Sectional Champions!!!
The Wolfpack won the IHSA Sectional meet on Saturday. Leading the Wolfpack was Annika Swan who won for an impressive the third year in a row. Ally Shutler (4th), Elle Sheaffer (11th), Greta Sheaffer (13th), Lizeth Montes (16th), Rory Steinhofer (17th) and Olivia Brophy (30th) accounted for the winning score. IHSA Regional Champions!!!
The Wolfpack won the IHSA Regional with all seven runners finishing in the top 10. Annika Swan (1st), Ally Shutler (3rd) and Sarah Fitzgerald (5th) earned All-Regional honors. Pilar Curran (6th), Ella Kueker (7th), Gabriella Duque (9th) and Mary O'Reilly (10th) helped complete the winning team score.Read More -
Pack Races at Bud James Invite
Gabby Wrobel won her first race at Washington Park yesterday to lead the Wolfpack at the Bud James Invite. Seniors Gree Waller, Megan McClain, Camilla Martinez, Isabella Soriano, Julieta Mayorga and Maeve Gawne competed in their last race for Ignatius.Read More -
GCAC Champions!!!
The Wolfpack went back-to-back this past Saturday at the GCAC Championships. Annika Swan won her third consecutive individual title leading the Wolfpack to the championship. Ally Shutler (3rd), Greta Sheaffer (9th), Lizeth Montes (15th), Rory Steinhofer (18th) and Elle Sheaffer (19th) joined Swan on the All-GCAC team. Montes achieved a rare distinction by earning All-GCAC honors during all four years. In the Open race, Julieta Mayorga (1st) and Isabella Soriano (2nd) led a group of eight top-20 finishers for the Wolfpack. Wolfpack Break School Record at Lakes Invite
The weather was perfect for a fast run on Friday as the Pack won the Lakes Invite in record setting fashion. The Wolfpack ran its fastest team time in school history, led by Annika Swan's new school record to win the Gold Division in the 22 team field. Ally Shutler, Elle Sheaffer, Greta Sheaffer and Lizeth Montes combined to win in a field of top 2A schools. In the Silver Division the Pack also took home the title as Rory Steinhofer ran away from the field to lead the team to victory. Pack Place 2nd at Solorio
The Wolfpack finished second in a field of 24 teams at the Solorio Invite. Ally Shutler (6th) Elle Sheaffer (10th), Greta Sheaffer (11th) and Rory Steinhofer (15th) were medalists. Sarah Fitzgerald (26th) rounded out the team score in a field of 149 finishers. Annika Swan competed in a national meet near Terre Haute, Indiana. She finished sixth, running one of the 25 fastest times in the history of that course.Read More -
Strong Showing for Pack in Peoria
The four Wolfpack runners had a strong showing at the Peoria Notre Dame Invite on Saturday. Annika Swan (3rd) and Lizeth Montes (51st) had season-best times. Elle Sheaffer (64th) and Greta Sheaffer (65th) ran career-best times in a field of 480 runners.Read More -

The Wolfpack recorded its highest finish ever taking 3rd overall at the Lake Park Invite. Annika Swan (3rd) and Ally Shutler (4th) led the way for Ignatius. Elle Sheaffer (28th), Greta Sheaffer (30th) and Lizeth Montes (46th) rounded out the team score.Read More -
Wolfpack Win Grayslake Invite
The Wolfpack won the eight-team meet at Grayslake Central. Annika Swan won and was followed by Ally Shutler (2nd) and Lizeth Montes (5th). The remaining Pack ran together before kicking in the last 200 meters. Elizabeth Schmiedeler and Pilar Curran established big PRs and 12 girls ran under 20:00 for the Wolfpack.Read More
